HIP BURSITIS
Expert diagnosis and treatment for hip bursitis by orthopedic specialists in Wisconsin. Relief from hip pain starts here.
Hip bursitis is a common cause of hip pain, particularly in active adults who overuse their joints or spend prolonged periods sitting or lying on one side. It occurs when one of the bursae in the hip becomes inflamed, leading to pain, stiffness, and discomfort with movement.
At Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin, our orthopedic specialists diagnose and treat hip bursitis using personalized, evidence-based care to help patients return to daily activities with less pain.
What Is Hip Bursitis?
A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between bones, tendons, and muscles. In the hip, bursae help reduce friction during movement. Hip bursitis develops when one of these bursae becomes irritated or inflamed, most commonly the trochanteric bursa on the outside of the hip.
When inflamed, the bursa can cause localized pain that may worsen with activity or pressure.
Causes of Hip Bursitis
Hip bursitis can develop due to a variety of factors, including:
Prolonged pressure on the hip, such as side sleeping
Injury or trauma to the hip
Muscle imbalances or poor biomechanics
Arthritis or spine conditions affecting hip mechanics
Previous hip surgery
Women and older adults are more commonly affected, but hip bursitis can occur at any age.
Symptoms of Hip Bursitis
Common symptoms include:
Pain on the outside of the hip or thigh
Tenderness when pressing on the hip
Pain that worsens with walking, climbing stairs, or lying on the affected side
Stiffness or reduced range of motion
Discomfort that may increase after prolonged activity
Symptoms may begin gradually or appear suddenly following an injury.
Diagnosing Hip Bursitis
Diagnosis begins with a thorough physical examination and review of symptoms. Your orthopedic specialist may assess hip movement, tenderness, and gait. Imaging studies, such as X-rays or advanced imaging, may be used to rule out other causes of hip pain and confirm the diagnosis.
Accurate diagnosis ensures the most effective treatment plan.
Treatment Options for Hip Bursitis
Non-Surgical Treatment
Most cases of hip bursitis respond well to conservative treatment, which may include:
Activity modification and rest
Anti-inflammatory medications
Physical therapy to improve strength and flexibility
Corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation
Ice or heat therapy
These treatments aim to relieve pain and prevent recurrence.
Surgical Treatment
Surgery is rarely needed for hip bursitis. In cases where symptoms persist despite comprehensive nonsurgical care, surgical intervention may be considered to remove the inflamed bursa or address underlying structural issues.
When to See a Specialist
If hip pain is affecting your ability to walk, sleep, or stay active, it is important to seek care. Early evaluation by an orthopedic specialist can help alleviate symptoms and prevent the development of chronic pain or mobility issues.
