Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a powerful diagnostic tool used to create detailed images of the inside of your body. Whether you're scheduled for an MRI at our Brookfield or Pewaukee location, it's important to know what to expect and how to prepare. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.
What is an MRI?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It’s a non-invasive imaging technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed images of organs, tissues, and other structures inside your body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI doesn’t use ionizing radiation, making it a safe option for many diagnostic purposes.
What Should I Wear to My MRI?
When preparing for your MRI, wear comfortable, metal-free clothing. Avoid zippers, buttons, belts, underwire bras, and sports bras with metal components. Brands like Lululemon and Under Armour, which sometimes contain metal woven into the fabric, should also be avoided. To make the process easier, you can change into the attire provided at the facility and secure your items in a locker, including jewelry, watches, wallets, and cell phones.
How Will I Be Positioned in the MRI Machine?
Your positioning in the MRI machine will vary depending on the body part being scanned:
- Foot, Ankle, Lower Leg, Knee, Thigh: You’ll be positioned feet first, on your back, with your head outside the machine.
- Hips: You’ll enter the machine feet first, lying on your back with your head just inside.
- Pelvis: Feet first with your head inside the machine. Tilting your head back might allow you to see out.
- Spine: Fully inside the machine, on your back, entering feet first.
- Wrist, Elbow: Head first, lying on your stomach.
- Shoulder: Head first, lying on your back.
Important Reminders for Your MRI
- The scanned body part will be positioned in the machine's center.
- If you’re claustrophobic or shorter in height, consider scheduling your MRI at our Brookfield location, where the machine tube is shorter, which may help alleviate discomfort.
- Music can be played during most exams, except when positioned for cervical spine and stomach scans.
- All MRI types can be scheduled at our Brookfield or Pewaukee locations.
Do I Need to Fast Before My MRI?
No fasting is required before your MRI. You can eat and drink as usual before your appointment.
When Will I Receive My Results?
Results from your MRI are typically available within 24-48 hours. Your physician will review them and discuss the findings with you.
How Early Should I Arrive for My Appointment?
It is very important to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time. This time is used to use the bathroom, change clothing, and review the screening form.
