Returning Home

What does returning to Wisconsin mean to you personally and professionally?

Growing up in Wisconsin (Mequon), I never really pictured myself living anywhere else. After getting the call to serve in the military while applying to medical schools after completing my undergraduate studies at UW-Madison, I commissioned into the U.S. Air Force and moved away from Wisconsin. Over the next 15 years, I completed my medical training, residency, fellowship, and practiced as a sports medicine physician while serving on active duty.

My wife, who is also from Wisconsin, and I enjoyed living in other states and certainly understood the appeal of settling somewhere warmer after our military commitment was complete. We explored opportunities across the country, but when the outstanding opportunity at OAW became available, our love for Wisconsin, our families, and the people of the Midwest ultimately brought us home.

It is incredibly exciting to return to a place where I have always felt “from,” despite being gone for so long. I’m thrilled to bring the treatment capabilities I’ve learned and refined throughout the country back to Wisconsin. I’m also excited that my four children will grow up here. Within days of moving back, my family experienced the overwhelming kindness, generosity, and welcoming spirit that make Wisconsin such a special place.

Why OAW?

What attracted you to OAW?

The entire model at OAW is centered around optimized musculoskeletal care. That focused approach leads to excellent outcomes and satisfaction for both patients and physicians. It avoids many of the distractions and competing priorities that can exist within larger healthcare systems.

I love that a patient can come to OAW and receive coordinated care in one location. They can see their physician, walk a few steps for imaging, a brace fitting, or physical therapy, and interact with a team that is entirely focused on helping them recover. When patients come to OAW, they know they’re being cared for by people specifically dedicated to orthopedic and sports medicine conditions.

Those values align perfectly with how I want to practice medicine.

Lessons from Military Service

Can you tell us about your military service and how it has influenced your approach to patient care?

Serving as a sports medicine physician in the military was all about helping service members return to their mission. The Air Force provided me with exceptional training, resources, and support, all focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for patients.

I had opportunities to serve in leadership, clinical, operational, tactical, and academic settings, and those experiences shaped my approach to care. When mission readiness is on the line, you must be willing to explore treatment options beyond traditional approaches.

As a result, I developed a broad toolkit of diagnostic and treatment strategies, particularly for patients who have been told they have exhausted their options. I’ve performed more than a thousand regenerative procedures involving injured or painful tendons, nerves, joints, ligaments, muscles, and bones. These include prolotherapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, myofascial treatments, and hydrodissection procedures.

Advanced Treatments and Technology

What new procedures or technologies are you bringing to OAW?

One of the most valuable tools I use is diagnostic ultrasound. It allows me to directly visualize muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments, and bone in real time and connect a patient’s symptoms to what I can actually see. It extends my physical exam and often identifies issues that may not be apparent on X-rays, MRI scans, or CT scans.

I also use ultrasound guidance for procedures, which improves precision, effectiveness, and patient comfort. This allows me to accurately treat joints, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and muscles.

In addition to traditional injections, I offer regenerative therapies, including dextrose prolotherapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and hydrodissection procedures, to help restore normal movement and function to irritated nerves and soft tissues.

Improving Patient Outcomes

How do these procedures improve the patient experience or outcomes?

My approach often uncovers previously undiagnosed causes of pain and provides evidence-based treatment options that may not have been available to patients before.

Many of these treatments focus on addressing the root cause of a problem rather than simply masking symptoms. They often minimize reliance on medications while helping patients achieve longer-lasting relief and improved function.

Most importantly, patients appreciate having additional options available to help them reach their personal goals.

Who Benefits Most?

What types of patients are the best candidates for these treatments?

Regenerative and sports medicine treatments can be a great option for patients who are experiencing pain but are not ready for surgery or may not be ideal surgical candidates.

Many of these individuals have already tried other treatments and may have been referred to pain management. I enjoy evaluating these patients to determine whether there are additional diagnoses or treatment options that may help them improve.

Of course, if surgery becomes the best option, I can seamlessly connect patients with our outstanding OAW surgical specialists.

Addressing Common Misconceptions

What misconceptions do patients commonly have about these procedures?

Some people hear regenerative procedures described as “experimental.” While we are still learning which treatments work best for specific conditions and patients, there is already substantial evidence supporting many of the procedures I perform.

Patients are often surprised to learn that these treatments can be safely performed in the clinic without an operating room and with little to no downtime afterward.

Looking Ahead

What are you most excited to build or grow in your practice over the next few years?

I am excited to expand OAW’s regenerative medicine capabilities over the next five years. This includes precision platelet-rich plasma (PRP), prolotherapy, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), and tenotomy procedures.

The people of southeastern Wisconsin deserve access to these cutting-edge, evidence-based treatment options, and I look forward to helping make OAW the most trusted destination for regenerative medicine in the region.

A Message to Future Patients

What would you like prospective patients to know before they walk into your office?

I am a full-scope sports medicine physician specializing in advanced diagnostic ultrasound and precision regenerative medicine. I have a deep toolbox of diagnostic and treatment options available.

I encourage patients to come in with optimism and an open mind. My goal is always to identify the best possible treatment strategy to help them achieve their goals, reduce pain, and return to the activities they enjoy.
