Meet Dr. Josh Labott: Hip & Knee Replacement Surgeon

For Dr. Josh Labott, the path to orthopedic surgery began during his military service. Watching orthopedic surgeons help injured friends and fellow service members regain function showed him the difference this care could make in someone’s life.

Today, Dr. Labott specializes in hip and knee replacement at Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin, with an approach centered on understanding each patient’s needs and goals. We asked him to share more about his background, his philosophy of care, and what patients can expect when they see him at OAW.

What inspired you to become an orthopedic surgeon?

My inspiration came during my time in the military. I witnessed the impact orthopedic surgery had on friends and team members who were injured in combat.

From nonsurgical treatment to extensive surgery, orthopedic surgeons helped restore function and gave people a way forward. Seeing that impact firsthand inspired me to pursue a career in orthopedics.

What areas of orthopedics do you specialize in?

I completed fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery. My practice focuses on:

I also offer a muscle- and tendon-sparing approach to knee replacement.

What do you enjoy most about caring for orthopedic patients?

Orthopedic patients have a strong desire to get better. Many are living with debilitating pain that affects their daily lives, yet they work incredibly hard to stay active and regain their independence.

Their motivation and determination make it rewarding to be part of their care and support them as they work toward recovery.

How would you describe your approach to patient care?

My approach was shaped by my time at Mayo Clinic during medical school and residency. The principle that the needs of the patient come first is something I carry with me in my own practice.

I want to establish a relationship with each patient, understand what matters to them, and treat them the way I would want my own family to be treated.

What can patients expect at their first appointment with you?

At the first appointment, I want to get to know you as a person and understand what you hope to achieve through treatment.

We’ll review your imaging and talk about your experience so far, including any previous treatments. From there, we’ll create a plan together based on your individual needs and goals.

What advice would you give someone considering orthopedic treatment or surgery?

Considering surgery can feel intimidating. You’re putting your trust in someone, and that is an important decision.

At OAW, we have an amazing team, and we all work together to provide excellent care. I want patients to know they have a team supporting them throughout the process.

What is the most rewarding part of helping patients recover from injury or pain?

The reward comes from seeing the journey from pain to recovery. Watching patients get stronger, move better, and regain function is what makes orthopedic surgery so meaningful to me.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and our two young children.

During my year of training in Denver, we discovered how much we enjoy hiking together. We’re looking forward to exploring the many trails Wisconsin has to offer.

What is something patients might be surprised to learn about you?

After graduating from Mukwonago High School, I joined the military and spent six years working in explosive ordnance disposal. That involved defusing improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, including roadside bombs.
