Join Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin for a free educational event on October 20, 2026 featuring Dr. Korey Kasper and Dr. Derek Damrow.
Shoulder pain can make even the simplest daily activities challenging. Whether you’re struggling to reach overhead, experiencing discomfort while sleeping, or finding it difficult to enjoy your favorite activities, ongoing shoulder pain can significantly affect your quality of life.
The good news? Advances in orthopedic medicine have created more options than ever for treating shoulder pain, from innovative non-surgical therapies to advanced shoulder replacement procedures.
On Tuesday, October 20, Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin (OAW) is partnering with ProHealth Care to host Shoulder Pain: Regenerative Medicine & Joint Replacement Options, a free educational event designed to help patients better understand their treatment choices.
Featuring OAW physicians Dr. Korey Kasper and Dr. Derek Damrow, along with physical therapist Craig Richter, the event will explore common causes of shoulder pain, emerging treatment options, and how patients can take the next step toward improved mobility and function.
Understanding Your Shoulder Pain
The shoulder is one of the body’s most mobile joints, allowing you to lift, reach, rotate, and move your arm in nearly every direction. However, that flexibility also makes it susceptible to injury, inflammation, and wear and tear.
Common causes of shoulder pain include:
- Rotator cuff injuries: Damage or irritation to the muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder.
- Shoulder arthritis: Breakdown of joint cartilage that can lead to pain, stiffness, and limited movement.
- Tendinitis and bursitis: Inflammation of the tendons or fluid-filled sacs surrounding the shoulder.
- Sports injuries: Repetitive motions or physical activity that places stress on shoulder structures.
- Age-related degeneration: Changes in the joint, tendons, and surrounding tissues that can develop over time.
While some shoulder conditions improve with conservative treatment, others may require more advanced care. Understanding the underlying cause of your pain is an important first step in determining the best treatment approach.
Exploring Non-Surgical Options: Regenerative Medicine and Sports Medicine
Not every shoulder problem requires surgery. For many patients, non-surgical treatments can help manage pain, improve mobility, and support a return to everyday activities.
During the event, Dr. Korey Kasper, a board-certified, fellowship-trained sports medicine physician, will discuss innovative approaches to managing shoulder pain without surgery.
His presentation will explore:
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound: Advanced imaging that allows physicians to evaluate muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues.
- Ultrasound-guided procedures: Techniques that help physicians precisely target areas requiring treatment.
- Regenerative medicine: Treatments designed to support the body’s natural healing processes, including select biologic therapies.
- Individualized non-surgical care: Treatment plans tailored to a patient’s condition, activity level, and goals.
Dr. Kasper will help patients better understand which treatment options may be worth considering and when additional intervention may be necessary.
When Is Shoulder Replacement the Right Choice?
For patients living with advanced shoulder arthritis, significant joint damage, or certain complex shoulder conditions, surgery may provide an opportunity to improve function and relieve pain.
Dr. Derek Damrow, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder and elbow care, will discuss when shoulder replacement may be recommended and how advancements in surgical techniques are helping patients regain mobility.
His presentation will cover:
- Common shoulder conditions that may require surgical treatment.
- When shoulder replacement should be considered.
- Advances in shoulder replacement procedures and technology.
- What patients can expect during recovery and rehabilitation.
- Factors that may influence surgical outcomes and long-term shoulder function.
Shoulder replacement is typically considered when pain and limited mobility significantly interfere with daily activities and other appropriate treatments have not provided sufficient relief.
For patients considering surgery, understanding the available procedures, potential benefits, and recovery expectations can help them make more informed decisions about their care.
The Importance of Physical Therapy in Shoulder Recovery
Whether a patient is pursuing non-surgical treatment or recovering from shoulder replacement, physical therapy can play an important role in restoring strength, flexibility, and function.
Craig Richter, PT, will discuss how physical therapy supports patients throughout their shoulder care journey, including conservative treatment, preparation for surgery, and post-operative rehabilitation.
With a personalized rehabilitation plan, patients can work toward improving mobility, rebuilding strength, and returning to the activities they enjoy.
